I haven’t held a Product Manager title but I have worked in (and founded) many places that needed a definition of what a Product Manager is – from being a low-level engineer to Founder and CTO. I certainly could have benefited from reading through – and IMPLEMENTING – what Ben Horowitz covered in “Good Product Manager/Bad Product Manager“.
I wish I had followed this definition fully – but wishing on the past isn’t going to change anything. Still – I wonder what may have turned out even better if we had used this definition.
Ben was back at Netscape (~17 years ago) at the time so this one has been around a long time. It still holds true and I am going to be reviewing it a lot as I wrestle with a couple of client projects.
REQUIRED reading for any leader working on managing technology products/projects.
